Three North Carolina squads are still in the running to win the 2024 national championship. One of the most anticipated matchups in the South Region of the 2024 College Basketball Tournament is coming up in the round of 16. The #1 seed Houston Cougars will battle the #4 Duke Blue Devils.

At stake is a chance to move on to the quarterfinals. The action tips off Friday at 7:39 PM from American Airlines Arena in Dallas, TX.

The Cougars earned their fifth straight trip to the round of 16. This was the result of their success against #16 Longwood, winning by 40 points in the first round. They would survive in the second round against a tough Texas A&M squad in a 100-95 overtime thriller.

Duke came into the tournament with two straight losses but responded with a 64-47 first-round win over #13 Vermont. They followed up with a 93-55 blowout of #12 James Madison, where they shot 50% from beyond the arc. That was all they needed to advance to the round of 16 for the 29th time in their history.

Houston vs. Duke Overview

The Cougars (32-4) are -4 spread favorites against the Blue Devils (26-8) in this South Region matchup. Houston led the Big 12 standings at the end of the regular season but shot just 26.8% from the field in the conference championship game. In that contest, they suffered a blow by Iowa State, losing 69-41.

Houston has the top-scoring defense in the country, giving up 57.7 points per game. In addition, they hold opponents to a 37.8% field goal percentage. However, they are just 17-17-2 against the spread this season due to their inconsistent shooting. That puts them at 240th in the nation.

Duke finished second behind North Carolina in the ACC standings. They lost to them in the regular season finale before receiving a 74-69 defeat against NC State in the conference tournament quarterfinals.

The Blue Devils average 79.8 points per game and have outscored opponents by an average of 13.3 points. However, Duke lost both games this season when they went in as moneyline underdogs.
