College Football Bowl Recap from the opening weekend

College Football Bows

The college football bowl season was full of surprises in the Saturday, Dec. 16 action. The favorites went 5-2 straight up, but the underdogs were 5-2 against the spread. Four of the seven games went over the total. The two outright underdog winners made big statements in Ohio’s 41-21 victory over Georgia Southern and Fresno State, routing New Mexico State 37-10.

Ohio Bobcats backups shined on offense

The Ohio Bobcats won their sixth straight bowl game by taking the Myrtle Beach Bowl. Freshman running back Rickey Hunt only had six carries for 19 yards during the regular season but racked up 115 rushing yards and four touchdowns in the rout of the Eagles. Ohio quarterback Parker Navarro threw for 120 yards with a touchdown and rushed for another 71 yards in the victory.

In-State advantage did little to help New Mexico State

The New Mexico State Aggies had an extremely successful season but went out flat as Fresno State dominated them. Quarterback Diego Pavia only threw for 58 yards with an interception as the Aggies struggled to move the ball. Pavia did rush for 72 yards and the team’s only touchdown.

Jacksonville State understood the assignment

In their first year at the FBS level, the Jacksonville State Gamecocks were not expected to be eligible for postseason bowl. Jacksonville State was able to participate in the New Orleans Bowl, and pulled off a thrilling 34-31 overtime victory over Louisiana Lafayette.

Florida A&M wins the HBCU National Championship

The MEAC had won six of the first seven Celebration Bowls, and when the Howard Bison jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead, it looked like that trend may continue. FAMU rallied in what turned into a classic, and pulled out a 30-26 win, as a touchdown favorite.

35 College Football Bowl Games left

Seeing how the rest of the college football bowl season turns out will be exciting. Winners and Whiners will have free college football bowl picks for every game down the stretch.

The playoffs will take place on New Year’s Day when Alabama faces Michigan in the Rose Bowl, and Texas will take on Washington in the Sugar Bowl.
