How Beach Volleyball Works
Each team consists of two players and the first team to win two sets wins the match. To win a set, it’s the first team to 21 points by at least a two-point margin. A tie-breaking third set is played to 15 points, still by at least a two-point margin. Both the Men’s and Women’s Beach Volleyball competition consists of six pools of four teams. The pool winners, runners-up, and two best third-ranked teams advance to the Round of 16. There is also a round of four third-place teams that compete to stay alive in a ‘lucky loser’ round.
The Favorites
The US Women have the second and third-ranked teams in the world in Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss and Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes. Brazil’s Ana Patricia Ramos and Duda Lisboa are the top-ranked women’s duo.
On the Men’s side, Sweden’s David Ahman and Jonatan Hellvig are the heavy favorites to take home the top prize. First-time Beach Volleyball pair Miles Evans and former NBA player Chase Budinger have an outside shot at placing as well.
