What is the Repechage?

The 2024 Summer Games has introduced the repechage round, adding an extra stage between the preliminary heats and semifinals for many track events. Previously, only the top finishers from each heat, along with a few fastest losers, advanced to the semifinals. Now, athletes who don’t automatically qualify in the first round have a second chance to compete in the repechage. The top performers from both rounds then move on to the semifinals. This format extends competition to four rounds, including the final.
