Dodgers vs. Padres Preview
The Dodgers are the lone NL West team with a winning record coming into this series against the Padres. They’re second in the NL in batting and lead the league in home runs, hits and RBIs. The Dodgers’ James Paxton (2-0, 1.64 ERA) will take the hill against the Padres on Sunday night. He shut out the San Francisco Giants in five innings of work but gave up five walks while getting the win before the Twins got to him for two earned runs in 6.0 innings.
The Padres responded to a disappointing 2023 season by cutting their payroll and making several other roster changes. Cy Young winner Blake Snell left in free agency, and the San Francisco Giants hired manager Bob Melvin after he departed San Diego. Under new manager Mike Shildt, the Padres are second in the NL in homers, hits and RBIs. They’re also fourth in stolen bases.
One of the Padres starters from the South Korea series will take the mound on Sunday. Yu Darvish (0-1, 3.86 ERA) will make his fifth start of the young season. He’s looking for his first win after giving up eight earned runs across 18.2 innings with 20 strikeouts. Darvish gave up one earned run in 3.2 innings in the season opener against the Dodgers.
