Howard won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament, while Wagner advanced out of the Northeast Conference bracket. Both teams were underdogs in those leagues. Howard was the MEAC’s No. 4 seed, while Wagner was the No. 6 seed in the NEC.
