Betting Preview: World Cup qualifying

A total of 48 countries will play the World Cup in 2026, more than in any previous finals. But with three spots already claimed by the co-hosts competition is fierce, particularly in CONCACAF (North America’s federation) where just one guaranteed qualifying place is up for grabs still. This week sees the start of the second round, from which 12 teams will eventually emerge with their World Cup hopes still intact.

In Asia, the AFC qualifiers are well underway with four second round games already played. Seven teams have clinched qualification for the next round and more could follow after Thursday’s games. There is also a full set of group games to look forward to in the African confederation, where the likes of Egypt and Algeria will be hoping to build on strong starts and take a further step towards the finals with victory on Thursday.
