Super Bowl LVIII Matchup
Super Bowl LVIII will be a rematch of four years ago when the Chiefs won over the Niners 31-20. San Francisco began the season with five straight wins before their offense sputtered, and they lost three consecutive games where they scored 17 points. Many were concerned that maybe Brock Purdy didn’t have enough experience in his second season in the league, but he responded by leading the 49ers to a 7-2 record to close out the regular season.
San Francisco has seven Super Bowl appearances, with their last championship coming after the 1994 season when they beat the San Diego Chargers 49-26. They lost the previous two times against the Chiefs in 2020 and the Baltimore Ravens in 2013.
Kansas City’s path to the Super Bowl wasn’t as easy as their last two appearances. After opening the season with a home loss to the Detroit Lions, Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs to six straight wins, but they would win consecutive games again until the final two weeks.
While Mahomes’ numbers are down from last season, he’s at his best in the playoffs. He has a 68% completion percentage, four touchdown passes, and no interceptions this season.
This will be the Chiefs’ sixth Super Bowl, and they have won their last three appearances in 1970, 2020 and last season when they beat the Philadelphia Eagles. KC entered the postseason as the #3 seed in the AFC, beating three of the league’s top teams, the Miami Dolphins, the Buffalo Bills, and Baltimore, to reach the championship game. They hope to become the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since the New England Patriots in 2005.
