Toledo went 8-5 SU & 9-4 ATS, 7-6 O-U. This will be the first game since 2016 that Jason Candle will not be on the sidelines, as he left to take over UCONN. In comes Mike Jacobs from FCS Mercer. They don’t rerun much production from last season's team. The top returnee in tackles had 35, and the top returnee in yards of any kind had 194 receiving yards. They brought in 37 transfers, a lot from Merer. RB CJ Miller and WR Adjatay Dabbs, Mercer racked up 6.8 yards per play last season with a balanced approach that left them third in the nation in yards per game. This is going to be an aggressive defense under Brown. Last year’s Mercer group only allowed 3.4 yards per carry, but gave up 5.7 yards per play because they got burned for some explosives in the
passing game.
MSU went 4-8 SU & 7-5 ATS, 7-5 O-U. Jonathan Smith 2.0 is over, and it wasn’t any better than John L. Smith 1.0. Pat Fitzgerald was not on my top 10 ;ist but he has had success in the Big 10 with Northwestern. They return 6 starters on both sides of the ball, but more importantly, I think they may have a quarterback for the first time since Connor Cook. Alessio Milivojevic, who was Mr. Backdoor Cover against Nebraska, Indiana, and Michigan last year, took over the starting job in the final four games of the season, as the Spartans went just 1-3, but two of the three losses were by three points. They bring in a new offensive coordinator, Nick Sheridan, who comes from the same role at Alabama. An OC from Bama doesn’t hold the same luster since Saban and his coaches' rehabilitation program left Tuscaloosa. They lost their top 3 receivers. For the rushing attack, they brought in UConn transfer Cam Edwards (1240 yards in 2025 Spartan Nation remembers the last transfer rb we had. Super Bowl MVP Keneth Walker III led the Spartans to an 11-2 record. The defense has to get better, as they had just 22 sacks in 12 games last season.
MSU usually takes care of business against the MAC, and I look for them to come out and get a win for their new coach… lay the points with the Spartans.
