The PLAY: Paris Saint Germain 105
With the World Cup heading to North America this summer, The GoldSheet will be ramping up its soccer coverage over the next few weeks. On Wednesday, we take a trip to Paris for a look at PSG vs Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League.
We haven't been seeing the same Paris Saint Germain as a year ago, or at least the final few months of last season, when Luis Enrique’s club blew away everyone in its path en route to the Champions League crown. One excuse? Lineup stability, or instability, due to injuries, as Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé and right-back nonpareil Achraf Hakimi have only played roughly half of available minutes, while midfielder Fabian Ruiz remains out. We are still wondering why any team would move on from Gigi Donnarumma in goal, too, as Pep Guardiola was glad to make room for him at Man City. There is also the matter of a rematch of the Club World Cup in the States back in July, that Chelsea won with shocking ease 3-0, in a master class by Enzo Maresca, who outfoxed Luis Enrique by pressing PSG aggressively. It all worked like a charm for Chelsea in Maresca’s finest hour, but he’s now out and Liam Rosenior is in, and after an encouraging start to his regime, Chelsea have started to give away points in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Dembele and Hakimi have at least returned to active duty for PSG. We’re not used to seeing plus prices on a PSG straight win at Parc des Princes, and while it’s only +105 or so on the three-way, that’s still too good to bypass with a top recommendation.
