With the World Cup heading to North America this summer, The GoldSheet will be ramping up its soccer coverage over the next few weeks. On Sunday, we take a trip to the English Permier league for a look at Tottenham's trip to Anfield.
It's an exercise in creative writing to craft any argument to go with Spurs these days, with the marketplace having already made necessary adjustments. Simply, if we want to go against Tottenham, we’re going to have to pay. I’s hard to remember a series of moves and decisions going any more sideways, especially the brief tenure of Igor Tudor behind the bench which has only poured petrol on the fire. It's four straight humbling losses since his appointment, which might not last beyond Sunday if current form holds. Injuries haven’t helped Spurs, but Tudor isn’t helping things with questionable squad selection, a look of disorganization for his team on the pitch, and puzzling post-game comments, with an embarrassing sequence early in last Wednesday’s Champions League encounter at Atleti the latest humiliation. The question at Anfield is how to best go with Liverpool, in itself a bit of a risky proposition these days, especially with focus surely on the return leg of its own Champions League matchup vs. Galatasaray on Wednesday. Arne Slot, however, needs three points to sustain the challenge to get back to the Champs League next fall, and there are too many weapons for the Reds to keep wasting, especially as Florian Wirtz has shown better form lately, as has Mo Salah, and Hugo Ekitike one squad member who hasn’t disappointed. Tottenham allowed four goals in the first half against Atletico Madrid earlier this week, and while it's unrealistic to expect the same from Liverpool in this contest, we are looking for The Reds to jump out to a fast start in hopes of rotating players in the second half.
