The PLAY: Paris Saint Germain +0.25 (102)
With the World Cup heading to North America this summer, The GoldSheet will be ramping up its soccer coverage over the next few weeks. On Tuesday, we take a trip to the Stamford Bridge as Chelsea hosts PSG for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League matchup.
Talk about a rough quarter-of-an-hour! Level at 2 after 75 minutes last Wednesday at Parc des Princes, everything unraveled in spectacular fashion for Chelsea as PSG banged home three more goals before the final whistle to take a 5-2 lead to London for the second leg. Crisis is never far away at Stamford Bridge, and all of a sudden the shine has come off of the studious Liam Rosenior, the recently-appointed gaffer who made a splendid start behind the bench after being moved by ownership from Strasbourg, though with those last 15 minutes in Paris and then a very limp 1-0 home loss to Newcastle on the weekend, Chelsea’s chances of making a return to the Champions League next fall have taken a turn for the worse. Though considering the pricing for this Tuesday night clash, the marketplace apparently remembers how Luis Enrique’s squad almost squandered a 5-1 aggregate lead over scrappy Aston Villa in a quarterfinal matchup last spring; it's rare to get PSG at this sort of a straight-win price. Yet PSG remembers last spring, too, and Luis Enrique for one, and Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé for another, have assured there will be no letdown for the holders on Tuesday night. That ruthless display last week reminded much of a similar goal explosion last winter against Man City, scoring four unanswered to overturn a 2-0 deficit, assuring passage to the KO phase and triggering a late-season PSG surge that resulted in the Champions League crown. Moreover, Luis Enrique was not caught out by the same Chelsea tactics that Enzo Maresca used to fluster PSG in last summer’s Club World Cup finale (maybe Rosenior wasn't paying attention). In particular, Luis Enrique's introduction of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia into the match would prove destructive to Rosenior’s crew down the right flank, as PSG reminded all of what it is capable. With Chelsea forced to play on the front foot, it risks being picked apart on the counter-attack by PSG’s pace and firepower. The PSG win price at +190 or thereabouts thus tempts, but Chelsea was also able to briefly expose defensive frailties in the holders, so we’d rather go on the Asian Line +0.25 goals at roughly even money with PSG and simply be happy with a result.
