The PLAY: Under 143.5 (-110)
2% Northwestern State/SF Austin Under (4:00 ET): Let’s head to the Southland for what will now be a Tuesday afternoon tipoff as Mother Nature continues to wreak havoc on the College Basketball schedule south of the Mason-Dixon line. This game was originally going to be played yesterday (Monday) but got pushed back a day. Northwestern State also had Saturday’s home game vs. East Texas A&M get postponed, so the Demons have not played since 1/19 - when they lost 82-80 at Houston Baptist. They did cover (as 2.5-point underdogs) and will come into this game at SF Austin on a 6-game ATS win streak.
As was the case for each of those previous six games, Northwestern State is a dog tonight, although this time they’re getting double digits from the oddsmakers (closed as a single digit dog each of the L6 games). SF Austin currently leads the Southland with a 10-1 SU conference record, one game ahead of McNeese, who is also a KenPom Top 100 team. Buoyed by those two teams, the Southland is rated much higher than normal this season. SF Austin’s only conference loss was at McNeese (66-64 as 10.5-point underdogs). The Lumberjacks’ three losses this season have been by a total of nine points.
I don’t want to lay double digits here, but do like the Under as - I believe - all the schedule shuffling that’s gone on for these two teams will have an adverse effect. More so on the offensive end. I get that Northwestern State has been bad defensively, but they play slow. Their offensive possessions - on average - are among the 35 longest in the country. Just so happens SF Austin is forcing its opponents to a Top 35 longest average possession length. So unless Northwestern State somehow shoots the lights out (which I don’t see happening), they won’t score much. SF Austin is 13th nationally in effective FG% allowed. As for SF Austin’s scoring output, the fact they are 343rd in FT shooting should aid our Under. Off a hot shooting game at Lamar on Saturday, should be some regression for the Lumberjacks here. Last game was their highest scoring output vs. a D-I opponent since 11/7. 2% Northwestern State/SF Austin Under (Play to 140.5)
