| MLB | (917) Pittsburgh Pirates at (918) Houston Astros: Moneyline | 8:10pm EDT - Jun 4/2026 |
The PLAY: Pittsburgh Pirates -105 Jared Jones (RHP), Kai-Wei Teng (RHP) Must Start
The Pirates really let one slip away last night as they allowed the Astros to score six runs (all coming with two outs) in the bottom of the eighth. On the bright side, the Bucs have now scored 9+ runs in four consecutive games, the first team to do so that in 2026. I'm still a believer in this team, which has a top four run differential in the National League (+33). You should look for them to bounce back tonight.
While the Pirates haven't been nearly as productive at the plate on the road as they have at home, the first two games of this series here in Houston have seen them score 19 runs. Contrary to what we saw unfold last night, it has been the Astros' bullpen that has been an abject disaster with the highest ERA in all of MLB (5.30). Closer Josh Hader is now back and tonight's stater Kai-Wei Teng has been solid. But Teng has not been as effective vs. lefties and a Pirates lineup that has scored 44 runs the L5 games is full of those.
Bottom line: look for the 'Stros to once again allow the proverbial "crooked number" tonight. Astros pitching has allowed the fourth most runs in baseball this season. Pittsburgh also has the ability to "manufacture" runs as they rank 2nd in MLB with 62 stolen bases.
Pirates' pitching has recorded 9 or more strikeouts in 8 consecutive games. Jared Jones, making his second start since returning from injury, will look to add to that total here tonight. While it was by no means a "great" return to the rotation for Jones last week vs. Minnesota, he did strikeout six batters. Look for him to pitch well tonight against an Astros lineup that has a bottom five batting average at home (.229).
