The PLAY: Jarren Duran Bases Over 1.5 (105) Action
After a very slow start to the season, Jarren Duran has been finding some confidence at the plate in recent weeks. The Red Sox left fielder has earned a hit in six-straight games, including a 2-for-5 night against the Blue Jays on Tuesday. Duran has eight home runs in his last 23 games, and he should enjoy another favorable matchup on Wednesday. Toronto is hopeful that Max Scherzer will be able to provide some form of stability within the Blue Jays' rotation, but it's hard to see that coming to fruition. Scherzer returned from a two-month stint on the IL last week against the Phillies where he allowed five runs on five hits with three walks in 3.1 innings. Home runs have been the biggest issue for Scherzer as the 41-year-old has allowed nine home runs in 22.0 innings pitched this season. He also allowed a home run in his final Triple-A rehab start before getting called up to Toronto last week. Duran enters Wednesday in the bottom-20th percentile among hitters in walk rate this season and Duran has not generated a single walk in the month of June. So when he's at the plate, he's looking to swing the bat. Scherzer enters this contest with career-worst numbers in barrel rate, average exit velocity, expected batting average allowed, weighted on-base average allowed, hard-hit rate, strikeout rate, walk rate and expected ERA. Nineteen of Duran's 23 extra-base hits this season have come against right-hand pitching. Duran has hit a home run against Scherzer in the past, and we certainly wouldn't be shocked if he found the seats at Fenway this evening.
