The PLAY: Youri Tielemans (BEL) Over 1.5 Shot Attempts
Youri Tielemans was the Belgian hero against Senegal in the Round of 32, and the Red Devils will likely be looking in his direction once again on Monday night. Tielemans scored the game-tying goal in the 89th minute against Senegal then made the game-winning penalty kick in extra time to pull off the improbable come-from-behind win. Belgian manager Rudi Garcia has struggled to keep a consistent lineup on the field, juggling Belgium's aging generation (Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne) with the up-and-comers. Lukaku did not start against Senegal and was brought on at halftime. De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku were both sub'd off after 55 minutes, which raised an eyebrow around the Belgian camp. But Tielemans has remained a constant in the Red Devils' lineup and we are looking for him to generate over 1.5 shots against the US on Monday night in Seattle. Tielemans has played 385 out of a possible 390 minutes for Belgium thus far, so he's not in much danger of being removed from this match. At the 2024 Euro tournament, Tielemans averaged 2.40 shots per 90 minutes. During World Cup qualifying, Tielemans averaged 3.06 shots per 90 minutes. Through the first four matches of this event, Tielemans is averaging 2.1 shots per 90 minutes. American goalkeeper Matt Freese has passed every test thus far, but he's still VERY inexperienced on this stage. From his midfield position, Tielemans is very capable of launching a long-range shot from outside the box to see how Freese handles the spotlight. Including the two warm-up matches against Croatia and Tunisia prior to the start of the tournament, Tielemans has generated at least two shots in five of Belgium's last six matches.
