The PLAY: Boston Red Sox -124 Payton Tolle (LHP), Noah Schultz (LHP) Must Start
The Chicago White Sox are five games above .500 and lead the AL Central, which is not something that many pundits saw on the horizon in 2026. One of the most-impressive angles from that feat is that the White Sox have largely done this without the help of one of their top prospects. When 22-year-old Noah Schultz was called up to the big leagues, the South Side erupted for the arrival of their hometown hero but it has not been a smooth rookie season for the youngster from Oswego East High School. Schultz enters Tuesday in the bottom-10th percentile among pitchers in expected ERA, chase rate, walk rate and barrel rate. After a five-week stint on the IL, Schultz returned to the mound against the Orioles last week and allowed three runs off four walks in 4.1 innings. He drew a tough challenge on Tuesday as the White Sox welcome Boston to the Windy City. The Red Sox are hitting .264 against lefty pitching this season (No. 3 in MLB) with a .336 on-base percentage (No. 3) and a 109 wRC+ (No. 6). Boston's lineup has the seventh-lowest strikeout rate against lefties this season. Standing 6-foot-10, the biggest advantage that Schultz has is unfamiliarity as opposing lineups have to deal with his unique frame for the first time. That advantage will be neutered on Tuesday because the White Sox are in the same boat against Red Sox starter Payton Tolle. Randal Grichuk is the only White Sox hitter that has ever faced Tolle before. Tolle has been very strong away from home this season, posting a 3.41 ERA with a 1.01 WHIP in five starts away from Fenway. Both teams had off yesterday so both bullpens are on equal rest. That should play into the hands of the Red Sox.
