The PLAY: Draw 175
A late spurt on Sunday vs. New Zealand in Vancouver likely got Egypt enough points to advance to the KO phase. It was also enough to move the Pharaohs clear on top of Group G, and better yet, ex-Liverpool striker Mo Salah finally joined the World Cup party with his first goal of the competition.
Yet Iran, diistractions and all, continues to plug onward and has managed a pair of draws (including vs. heavily-favored Belgium last Sunday) to give itself a fighting chance to make the KO round. Another draw could well turn the trick as that would also keep Iran’s goal differential at 0, which would put it ahead of a couple of teams also on three points (South Korea and Scotland). Note goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand is a new hero in Tehran after spectacular work in the nil-nil vs. Belgium. Play Egypt-Iran Draw (at Seattle)
